Vientiane province spends big on embankment project
Time:04/03/2011 10:00

Vientiane province is spending over 40 billion kip to rebuild an embankment in two districts after it was damaged last rainy season.

Engineers survey the site of the embankment project in Vientiane province.

According to local media, the project covers more than 500 metres in Pakxao village of Meun district and over 850 metres in Siphoum village of Sanakham district.

The project is currently 40 percent complete, construction having begun late last year. It was initially scheduled for completion within two years but officials believe it could be finished within one year due to good progress.

The areas most affected during the rainy season are located along National Road No 11, with the worst damage in Pakxao village cutting off transportation from the province to northern Laos and Vientiane.

The damage in Siphoum village was also severe with erosion occurring close to the provincial capital.

The Mekong River runs for 79km alongside Vientiane province, with many areas suffering from erosion each rainy season. The budget for the project is being provided by the Lao government.
