Laos and Myanmar have agreed on switching their rotary rights to host ASEAN Summits in 2014 and 2016.
The Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong and visiting Foreign Minister of Myanmar Nyan Win discussed the issue in Vientiane on Wednesday.
Mr. Thongsing said the Lao government had agreed with Myanmar's proposal to host the ASEAN Summit in 2014. Accordingly the Lao PDR will host the ASEAN Summit in 2016 instead of 2014.
Mr. Nyan paid a courtesy visit to Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong after he had participated in the 10th meeting of the joint commission on Lao-Myanmar Cooperation which was held in Pakse, Champassak province.
Mr. Yien Win conveyed warm greetings of Myanmar Prime Minister Thien Sen to the Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong and informed the latter of the outcome of the 10th meeting of the joint commission on Lao-Myanmar Cooperation. He said that both sides reviewed their cooperation over previous years and approved a plan on enhancing the bilateral cooperation.
Mr. Thongsing Thammavong appreciated the achievement of the 10th meeting of the Lao-Myanmar joint commission and highly valued the visit to Laos of Mr. Nyan Win which contributed to the enhancement of the traditional friendly relations and close cooperation between Laos and Myanmar and called on the two countries to enhance the cooperation in effectively implementing the agreement signed in the 10th meeting of the joint commission on Lao-Myanmar Cooperation for the benefit of the people of the two countries.
The Lao Premier highly valued the friendly relations and bilateral cooperation between the two neighbours which has enjoyed increasing growth, friendship and mutual trust, especially in political area, and the constant exchange of visits by leading officials of the two countries, the resolution of border-related issues and the achievement of the Myanmar government and people in their national construction and national reconciliation policy which had been implemented with a noticeable result, especially the general elections in last November.
Mr. Thongsing said that the Lao government was convinced the new government of Myanmar which would be formed in the near future would further implement the good neighbourly policy with the Lao PDR and enhance the friendly relations with other ASEAN members.
